Argonaut Books and Leith Kino are continuing their collaboration with Saturday screenings over September in the bookshop space.
Last and First Men (2020)
In Jóhann Jóhannsson’s experimental Last and First Men (2020), adapted from Olaf Stapledon’s 1930 science-fiction novel, a future race of humans on the brink of extinction sends a message back to those living in the 20th century.
The film juxtaposes Jóhannsson’s menacing ambient score, Tilda Swinton’s mesmerising reading of the final chapters of the book, and haunting images of the spomeniks - abstract monuments built across the former Yugoslavia between 1960 and 1990 to commemorate significant historical events.
Part science fiction, part meditation on memory and civilisation, Last and First Men is an unforgettable cinematic experience.
Tickets cost £6 and there are a number of free tickets available here for those not in a position to pay.
Please note that this screening will take place inside Argonaut Books (not Leith Depot).
Accessibility Information
Argonaut Books is an accessible, ground floor venue with gender neutral toilets. Seating is flexible and can be rearranged to accomodate specific needs and you're welcome to bring extra cushions for comfort if you like.

The bus stop outside serves routes 7,14, 16, 25, and 49, and (when they're running) trams stop nearby at the Foot of the Walk.
